I’ve been known to be a sucker for some soft Yacht Rock and I am not afraid to admit it. Those tunes make me happy and bring back memories of my parents jamming out to Michael McDonald or Boz Scaggs in Tahoe during the summer. It was all about good times, sweet shades, terry cloth shorts, and catchy lyrics. So I thought, why not create a post dedicated to all things “yachty?” It's basically a love list for navy, white, and nautical chic, with a little bit of yacht rock influence along the way.

In this issue, we cover striped clothing of all kinds, the nautical chic trend, boat shoes, gear and gifts, sunglasses, boat totes, hats, a special yacht rock playlist, and a favorite documentary.

Mate Gallery in Montecito nails vintage maritime gifts and nautical finds, and I love everything in the store. I gave my husband this candle last year for Father's Day, and he actually burns it in his office - the scent does not disappoint.
Stripes on Stripes
Never met a stripe we didn’t like! The list is long and covers everything from sweaters, pants, long dresses, short dresses, terry shorts, terry tops. You name it. This list is striped just for you.

A Literal Take on the Sailor Aesthetic aka “Nautical Chic”
Sailor chic is a trend making its way through the runways, and I am here for it. I love anything navy and white cotton poplin mixed with a tie or long collar. It’s a bit nostalgic and traditional with a modern twist. This set of crocheted pants and top is a fun nautical take on this theme. For the guys, I love these shorts by Rowing Blazers, and while I am not sure I can pull off a full head-to-toe sailor dress again anytime soon (see below), I am inclined to wear these sailor pants with any of the tops from this list.

Boat Shoes

You won’t wear them long once you’re on the boat, but when you do, make sure they’re boat-approved (non-marking shoes, please). Rothys x Fair Harbor just came out with a collaboration for a men’s boat shoe that is both good-looking and, as always with their shoes, machine washable. I have these white moccasins that may be the most comfortable driving shoes I’ve owned. The leather is soft as butter, and they look cute with ankle-length jeans to breezy dresses (a striped dress, of course). Boating shoes are popping up everywhere in a variety of price points, but these are a good find in many colorways. And in terms of price and tradition, you can’t beat the OG of boat shoes - the tried and true Top-Siders by Sperry. See the list here.

Gear & Gifts
Whether you’re on a boat or rocking on land, this list of beach gear will ensure you have everything you need (and is also great for gifts for your summer hostess). Bean bags for lounging, gorgeous glassware for your host, a large picnic basket or cooler, fun travel games, or chardonnay oil for sunscreen. An authentic Nantucket rope bracelet is always fun for the kids to wear all summer, too. The list goes on…

Sunnies
The obvious choice would be to wear classic aviators or original classic wayfarers, both by Ray Ban. They’re timeless and never go out of style. If you’re wanting a more sporty look, Smith Optics has a variety to choose from. However, you’re choosing to rock and yacht you’ll need a pair of shades from this list.

Boat Totes

Tote it ALL with the best and most durable canvas totes. You can never beat the original L.L. Bean boat tote, but to find an even cooler, broken-in one, consider checking out our friends at The Perfect and their hip collection of vintage totes. Or, for a super niche splurge, invest in a one-of-a-kind “Boatkin”— they take about 16 weeks to make, but I am tempted…

Aye Aye Captain
Who doesn’t love a fun hat? Captain or no Captain, wear one of these and you’ll get some smiles.

Last but not least…
A playlist of smooth hits for easy listening…
