The Gift that Keeps on Giving
Coming to you in your hands or on the screen here is a list of favorite subscriptions to gift this Mother's Day.
A little addition to our Mother’s Day Edit: our favorite subscriptions. Think beyond the one day; Make it one day each month (or week!). Brooke and I have both fallen in love with a weekly flower delivery from Wallflower Design. It is seasonal, artsy, and feels like something you would throw together if you had more flower power. We often send each other photos each week of our deliveries- it’s the best “pick me up.”
A little shop you should follow is Block Shop Textiles- the cutest sisters in LA making incredible textiles from scarves to wallpaper to table linens . They have a wonderful weekly newsletter called “Notes from the studio.” I learned from their newsletter about Laurie Ellen shortbreads. My mom is a big afternoon tea gal so I sent her a monthly delivery for Christmas- big hit!
You say “financial” anything to me and I basically fall asleep, but after a few reads, the Sunday Financial Times (thanks, hubby) is a necessary addition to my Sunday reading- arts, food, news- it has it all. If your mom likes to cook, the NYT cooking app is sort of a must. It’s a jillion cookbooks in one app: Melissa Clark, Alison Roman, Yotam Ottolenghi- the list goes on.
Is she a traveler or does she day dream of traveling? If so, she needs YOLO. It is a feast for the eyes and a wealth of travel info! I guess style attracts style because Yolanda Edwards of YOLO is married to Matt Hranek of WM Brown. It leans masculine (you might see it again in a father’s day post), but it is my favorite magazine to receive- always full of wonderful stories of beautiful craftsmanship from all over the world with the most beautiful photography.
The thing that we look forward to in our inbox (did you know that was possible?) is Air Mail. Graydon Carter of Vanity Fair has gathered journalists to bring us stories from world news to art to literature to hair salon drama. We find it all refreshing and informative. Is Mom a bookworm? Look no further than The Strand Book Hookup for a monthly delivery from one of New York’s favorite bookstores.
No one takes their coffee more seriously than Moms. There are a lot of coffee subscriptions out there, but Wirecutter always returns to Atlas and their stellar research rarely leads us astray. We are big hot sauce connoisseurs around the U&M office and we would LOVE to receive a subscription to the Hot Sauce of the Month Club. I bet your hot mama would too.
Last, but not least, we think your Mom needs our Union and Main newsletter. We hope you look forward to it landing in your inbox!
xx, Jenny and Brooke
