Hygge Hibernation
After the Holiday marathon of December, January should be dedicated to the art of rest and stillness. Below are our favorite ways to cozy up (no more calling it being lazy!). Heels off. Slippers on.
Jenny’s daughter, Annie, spent a semester abroad in Copenhagen. Upon visiting, she learned about the concept of Hygge “ho͝oɡə “a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being (regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture).” This is exactly what Union and Main is craving in January. This is not “new year, new you.” It’s just what we are doing to enjoy the slow pace of January instead of enduring it.

Almost everyone we know fears they are suffering from either Dysania- “an extreme difficulty rising from bed or an inability to leave the bed” or Clinomania- “an obsession with or profound desire for staying in bed.” How have we gone forty-seven Januarys without knowing these valuable words?
When we do rise from our beds this month, we are trying to make the most of the slow days and nights (avoiding the dreaded doom scroll) with things that rest our bodies and work our brains: French (we are determined to master it) and Mahjong (better late than never.) Jenny is taking guitar (is terrible, but makes her feel young and cool) as well as an art appreciation class through Stanford continuing studies with the hubs- (they offer incredible classes).
Below are things that define Hygge and some of our favorite ways to lean in.
Comfy Clothes:
J: I am very into grey hooded sweatshirts these days. It makes me think of my dad coaching football in the 80s. My faves are Perfect White Tee and The Hey Gang.
B: Loving this sweater, living in it.

Cozy Nook:
J: Jenni Kayne is the definition of Hygge, especially this cozy throw. No cozy nook is complete without our essential Kaymet Lap Tray (they are almost sold out!)
B: I take my baths seriously. I love a good soak and thought I would give these bath salts a try. Don’t be alarmed by the unfortunate color of the bath water it exudes. Besides that, I am a fan and think that mixture actually works. Also, these socks are great for keeping the toesies warm.
